Tacos Dorados con Salsa de Aguacate

Vegan Tacos Dorados Con Salsa de Aguacate Honorary Vegetable Shredder, Abigail brings us another amazing Mexican recipe, Tacos Dorados con Salsa de Aguacate!  Simple, cheap and seriously delicious! All qualifiers for a perfect Skate Snack!   You can make these in less then 20 minutes after a skate session with ingredients available just about anywhere! (Maybe not the Vegan Cheese and Vegan Sour Cream, but even some of our local Mexican groceries carry this stuff)Salsa de Aguacate Starting with the Salsa de Aguacate (Avocado) is so easy and amazing you may want to double your batch. What you need for the salsa: 1 Avocado, slice of a white onion about 1/2 inch lengthwise, 4 Jalapeños, 1 Tomatillo, 1 clove of garlic, juice from half a lime, Salt to taste ( we used about 1 – 1/12 table spoons)Salsa de Aguacate

Peel the avocado, onion and garlic, remove the jalapeños stems. Juice the lime, toss in the tomatillo and salt with everything else in the blender.  Blend on high and add water until you get a thin consistency. It shouldn’t be too thick. salsa de aguacateSalsa de Aquacate! Spicy and creamy like guacamole, but more refreshing! You should be able to pour it easily on top of the tacos. Carrots3 Carrots peeled with vegetable shredders, Gnar! Wait reverse that. Try to shred them thicker. If you have a mandolin this is way easier, but they should look like they do here.sautéed carrotsSauté the carrots until they are soft and bright. A little bit of olive oil and salt, this is fail proof so long as the carrots don’t burn.Tacos Dorados con CarrotsTime to wrap the tortillas! Put some carrot in the center and use a mild vegan cheese. Chicago Vegan Foods Mozzarella Teese has a perfect mild flavor balance for the spicy salsa!07TacosDoradosReadytofry(Tortilla Pro Tip: Microwave the tortillas for about 15-30 seconds and wrap them in a cloth towel. This will make them super ply-able and easier to roll like you see above.)08TacosDoradosPanLightly fry the rolled tacos in an oil coated pan. Be liberal with the oil. The torillas will soak it up like a sponge and then the tacos get a bit too crispy. We were going for lightly fried and soft. Ideally they should look like the three on the top. The bottom tacos are burned in comparison. Vegan Tacos DoradosAll lined up and ready to go. Tacos Dorados ready to be topped with Salsa de Aguacate, shredded cabbage and some vegan sour cream!

Vans Rowley Pro – Second Look Review

Vans Rowley Pro Vegan Skateboard shoesAfter about 10 hours of skate time, we take a second look at the Vans [Rowley] Pro. Available in 3 synthetic colorways. Black, Navy, and Red (pictured) all using a really nice looking synthetic-nubuck upper!

Rowley Pro Skateboard shoe synthetic nubuckThe bright red that once popped has been muddied (quite literally) by the dirty winter skating that is just a fact of life here in Chicago. Even still, the Rowley Pro looks great and seems to be wearing smoothly.

Rowley Pro Skateboard shoe synthetic nubuckCloser look at the toe, ollie area and lace cage, the usual offenders are getting the business end of the grip. The synthetic nubuck is smooth and takes a fair bit of abuse which is surprising, considering how thin the upper feels. Over all the shoe is extremely light but feels protecting, especially around the tongue and top of the shoe.

Rowley Pro Skateboard shoe synthetic nubuckThe vulcanized waffle soles have deep pockets all over, but the ball of the foot is wearing fast, Its the area that always makes you look at a Vans shoe and wish you could get a re-tread. The bottoms still feel super gummy and grippy though, so as longs as that lasts the board feel and maneuverability are going to be excellent.

Rowley Pro Skateboard shoe synthetic nubuckVans Rowley Pros feel super padded and comfortable when skating all day, and thats likely due to the inserts. Super cushiony at the heal and ball of the foot. Even if you don’t skate in them they are nice shoes to just stand around in. Needless to say, hard slams get a bit more cushion then the typical Vans shoe.

Summing it all up there are a few things that need to be mentioned. Most important, the sizing.

In the comments of the First Look we had several people talking about the sizing. Most felt that the Rowley Pro is running large. It would probably be advisable to try a half size down.  The size 10s we are skating feel loose. If you tighten them then its not to bad, but the heal is slipping.  If Vans fixes this its going to be a solid skate shoe. Get the right size and you may fall in love.

They are easy on, easy off. The soft mesh collar doesn’t offer to much ankle protection, but they don’t dig in either. The Rowley Pro feels so light but protective up front and on the ball of the foot, this means skating all day isn’t an issue.

Despite all the synthetic nubuck, the feet breath! No doubt your feet my sweat, but not like other synthetics.

(For full disclosure, the PR Coordinator for Vans could not confirm the origins of the glues. After looking into the issue further, Vans said they just couldn’t be sure.)

Vans size 6.5-16 $65.00 (synthetic in Black, Navy, and Red)

Arto Saari behind the lens

Arto Saari has been getting behind the lens more and more. Just check the fine print in the last 6 issues of Thrasher and then browse on over to his site. Call this a love letter to Cardiel if you will, he rides a fixie like no ones business and can still rip a pool like a master.
Veggie dogs on a coat hanger, what else do you need?” asks Arto. I can’t think of much else.

The Ghosts in Our Machine

The Ghosts in Our Machine, is a documentary about the work of Photographer Jo-Ann McArthur who has captured images of the modern industrialized use of Animals.  It premiers next month at the Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto Canada and has some strong potential to reach a wider audience then the average Animal Rights video.

McArthur has spent the last 15 years working on a photo project called, We Animals. She has inserted herself into a world that is mostly hidden and bares witness getting the up close quality and detail of National Geographic in the darkest moments of humanity. The photographs are sometimes beautiful but often bloody.

If you happen to be in Toronto at the end of April check it out. We will try to keep an update of any other screenings too.

The Tempster and The Transist

Emerica Vegan Skateboard Shoes The Tempster The TransistEd Templeton’s newest Emerica vegan skate shoe, The Tempster as you may have seen in our First Look Review is full of little extras. From the box art to the tongue details, even the insoles have a little touch of Ed. For Loyal pawns this is no surprise. A look back to 5 years ago with the Transist and Transist Hi give some nice comparison for a product that is certainly artful but ultimately designed to be destroyed.

Emerica Vegan Skateboard Shoes The Tempster The TransistFrom left to right, is the Transist Hi (spring 2008) Transist (fall 2008) and The Tempster Spring 2013. The former may not be readily available, but occasionally make an appearance on eBay and the occasional Amazon merchant page.

Emerica Vegan Skateboard Shoes The Tempster The TransistTransist Hi looked weird with the triple ribbed collars up top and some gnarly Sect art on the canvas section! Looks like something from the retro-futre!

Emerica Vegan Skateboard Shoes The Tempster The TransistThe toe caps and lace cages featured synthetic suede for some maximum durability! And check out the Monster in all its digitized glory, you even got a key chain charm!

Emerica Vegan Skateboard Shoes The Tempster The TransistTransist came in several colorways, all Vegan I might add. For the Fall 2008 line two out of six, of which this is one, broke from a solid color pattern and came with some of Ed’s art on the side

Emerica Vegan Skateboard Shoes The Tempster The TransistSynthetic suede toe caps and don’t forget a blue Transistor Sect up-chucking little americas on the tongue. Complete with accompanied keychain!

Emerica Vegan Skateboard Shoes The Tempster The TransistLast but not least, The vulcanized soles! Sure they got rubbed out after a few sessions, but its the detail that counts!

While you have the chance, don’t miss out on the current Tempster shoe. You’ll be kicking yourself wishing you’d bought a few to shred and stash for a rainy day.

Supra Pistol

Supra Pistol Vegan Skateboard shoeThe Pistol is the newest team model from Supra and comes in an all canvas upper vegan colorway! Designed for skateboarding this silhouette shoe is light weight and free moving around the collar with some extra padding in the rounded tongue. The toebox is a solid piece for consistent wear as is the style. The two tone look is nice and a little chill for Supra, usually known for a bit of flair. Vulcanized soles for the close board feel combined with Supra’s skate insoles should provide some nice cushion for the pushin’.

Zumiez size 7-13 54.95

Supra size 7-13 $55.00

Praxis Core

Praxis Core Vegan Skateboard ShoeThe Praxis Core is back in another vegan colorway. The lower cut of the Core has many of the elements that you think of when you think classic skateboard shoe: cup soled, padded, and double stitching everywhere! Praxis as we mentioned in our review last year of the Elemental is a core-skate company focused like a laser on the skateboard community.

This season the Core features a textured synthetic-leather and ballistic canvas upper. The collar has a nice cut around the ankle with a nice bit of padding without making the shoe look fat. The tongue is thin but still has some cushioning to keep your feet comfortable.

Praxis’s “Sacred Sole,” which is featured across the entire line of shoes manages to be extremely light, flexible, and durable! It feels so close to the board you’ll think its a vulc, but it has the style and comfort of a cupsole.

Zumiez size 8-13 $59.95
