Mercy For Animals Canada: Egg McMisery Investigation

Mercy For Animals Egg McMisery Investigation A recent investigation of Canadian factory egg farms by Mercy For Animals Canada (Egg McMisery) recently made news.  Canadian TV W-5 ran an investigative piece with the footage provided by MFA.The Egg industry is by far one the cruelest in animal agriculture when taking into account the sheer numbers of animals effected.

Mercy For Animals continues to show in their investigations what is standard industry practice.  Seems pretty simple that we should all just go vegan and stay vegan!  Journalism may be dead in America but is apparently still alive and well in Canada. Head over to CTV NEWS W5, to check out the W5 investigation. This is a good one to share with friends and family.

Steve Fauser

Steve Fauser is a hell of a skater and dedicated vegan. He’s also responsible for most of the Dandies Vegan Marshmallows you have ever consumed. After some of the comments from out last post, it seems fair to clear the air with some some sacrificial vegan blood.

Do you mind being called Chuck? Not at all – A couple of people run with that one.

What prompted the move to New Orleans? My position at World Industries was eliminated and I was laid off. My girlfriend and I are both from Louisiana and had been talking about moving back “one of these days ” which turned out to be the day I was let go. Everything was pointing to the move back and I was ready to be near friends and family.

Are you working? Doing what? How do you like it? I am currently working with Preservation to help build the brand and with the day to day operations. We are a small brand and I like being more involved than just a rider for a brand I believe in and want to help grow.

What happened in your life that made you go vegan? I gave up meat one year for Lent and that was the start of it. I noticed I started feeling better, so I stuck with it.

Was it a gradual change or sudden? I was veggie for about a year and then just started paying attention to labels and doing the research and went vegan.

Why the change up in your diet recently? What have you reintroduced back into your diet and why?  I recently started eating a little seafood and some cheese here and there. I would say I’m still 90 percent vegan , but bend from time to time. It makes an easier lifestyle choice when your with other people who are not vegan and I knew moving back to the south I would need to be more flexible in my diet. Eating and drinking are such a part of the culture here that you truly miss out if you don’t allow yourself to go with the flow sometimes.  I was vegan for 13 years pretty much the whole time I was in California. I want to say that I went vegan in 1999 and started slowly eating some seafood towards the end of 2012. My diet is still about 90 percent vegan.

Is Andrew Cannon vegan? Or veg? Andrew is veggie – he likes to keep it simple and enjoys desert a little too much to be strict vegan.

What shoes do you prefer skating in?  Canvas shoes with a vulc sole are my first choice. I will Shoe Goo them as many times as it takes.

Favorite terrain to skate? I love skating street, tranny spots, and mini ramps. Pretty much any sport that doesn’t involve jumping down something for no reason, but sometimes I get sparked and challenge myself to see if I can still do it.

What video part of yours are you most proud of? Humm – that’s a good question- I really was stoked on my Scarecrow Agents of Chaos part, but I still think my best one is in the near future.

Why do I think you had a part in Winona Riders?  No clue -Maybe because Shannon May had one and we are great friends and both grew up together and skated for G&S at the same time.

How often does someone ask you about Winona Riders? Only you, Kevin.

Where is Shannon May these days? Shannon is still in Lafayette. He owns his own plumbing business and plays in multiple bands. I met him for coffee about a month ago in Lafayette – Still the same guy and still has style for miles.

Fav spot to go out to eat in San Diego? Sipz in Claremont was for sure one of my favorites!

In Long beach? Lord Windsors

In New Orleans ? Still haven’t decided on my spot yet in New Orleans.

What other skaters do you know of that claim veganism? Vern , McCrank , Ed Templeton , Geoff Rowley.

Do you have a similar daily routine? Describe. Right now it’s pretty much wake and take the dog out, drink coffee , hang with the lady until she goes to work and then work from home . There are some errands thrown in there, a workout, and some skating.

In what year did you pick up your first skateboard? I want to say that it was 1988 or so- I remember it was the summer going to the 7th grade.  I couldn’t decide what I wanted for my birthday and it drug out for a couple of months until I saw some kids at school with boards and it looked like the best thing ever.

Your top three street skaters of all time? Natas, Gonz, Koston, – I have to throw Marc Johnson in there as well.

Top three vert dogs? Danny Way, Chris Miller , Lance Mountain- I went to the Pro-Tec Pool Party every year just to see the masters.

Do you have pets? How do you feel about pets? I have an amazing little dog named Bennie. My girlfriend and I love him to death. We got him when he was 8 weeks old and he’s now just over 6 months old.  I had a couple of dogs growing up and over the last 10 years have done so much traveling I couldn’t have a pet and take care of it. I like cats as well, but am much more of a dog person.

Are you a bicyclist? I have a single speed that I have been getting into lately. I actually do want to do a couple of long rides to test myself . I prefer to get around on my bike when I can. They are making strides for New Orleans to become more bike friendly, a lot of people bike-commute here.

Tell us about being pro for Preservation? Who runs it, who else is on the squad, have you taken trips w them? Preservation is owned by my good friend James who asked me about a year and half ago to ride for them. I was still living in California and was excited to have a tie back home. Since moving back I have gotten more involved and have been helping to run the day to day operations and help the brand grow. We are growing slowly and just working to tighten up the team, graphics, and continue to grow the brand.  With all of my experience as a team manager it was only fitting that I help with the team as well- right now the team consists of myself and the following ams -Justin Higgins, Sean “Squee” Guillory, Chance Hirsch, and Mickey Chim. Duane Pitre is also a part of the family.

Had you heard of veganskateblog.com before I contacted you about this interview. I  had heard of it before, but haven’t been a frequent visitor until now. Thank you and veganskateblog for the interview and everyone who takes the time to read this, a big thank you as well.

Cheers – Charlie Thomas over and out.

Habitat Guru Hi

Habitat Guru Hi Vegan Skateboard shoeHabitat Guru Hi is back in a vegan colorway. The shoe is in many ways a very basic thin canvas skateboard shoe. However the configuration of the flaps and lacing can change up the feel and style of how you skate. Great looking alternative to the standard skateboard shoe look.

Habitat Guru Hi Profile Vegan Skateboard shoesIf you pull the collar up you have classic hi-top look with out the bulk. . The shoe has a good stiff heal but can fold down in a snap.  The vulcanized soles are fantastic. Lace em up and get on your board, virtually no break in required.

“Sirens of the Lambs”

Banksy’s, “Siren of the Lambs” has been all over the news, but maybe you don’t read the LA Times.  Its a powerful piece of moving installation/performance art.  Banksy is supposedly English, though his identify isn’t publicly known, and I can’t shake how much this makes me think of the live transport protests all over Britain in the early and mid 90’s .   It isn’t often that you see a live transport truck in an urban or densely populated suburb area and this is a far cry from what a real animal transport looks like, but its stark and haunting.  Next time on that cross country road trip take a closer look on the road. The tractor trailers moving hounders of lives across massive distances completely exposed to the elements. Not such a pleasant want to spend the last remaining moments of ones life.  For all the free-range, humane-meat advocates out there. The animals still travel to slaughter the same way (sometimes on the same truck) as the feed lot cows. Pretty sure they kill them the same way too…

Banksy’s, “Artist in Residence” series continues in New York City through the month of October. His website has some excellent audio guides to add some context.

First Look Skate Review: Servant Dagon

Servant Dagon Vegan Skateboard ShoeThe Servant Dagon is an unbelievably awesome vegan skateboard shoe from Malmö Sweden!  Servant may be a newcomer, but is firmly rooting itself as a core skateboard shoe company. Founded by a couple of skaters who have worked for the big shoe manufactures, they have created a line up that feels amazing on a skateboard and has some key features that make shoes longer lasting and fun to skate!  VSB was tipped off by a reader on our instagram page about Servant and the company graciously provided their premier vegan skate shoe, the Dagon, for review!

Servant Dagon Vegan Skateboard shoeThe Dagon is a true modern cupsole. Slim enough that your feet can feel firm on the board with room to make quick maneuvers, yet enough padding that you’ll feel the protection of a much bulkier shoe. The upper is primarily a vegan faux-suede microfiber that Servant is calling 4Skin, (Who says the Swedes don’t have a sense of humor?) with a little canvas in the padded collar.

Servant Dagon Vegan Skateboard shoe

The single piece toe-cap wraps well around from the outer to inner mid-sole with three solid and protected stitch lines. The piped edges of the toe cap not only embed one of those stitches, it also serves as a lace saver. It’s one of those features that skaters appreciate. You could find them on skate shoes throughout the nineties, but as style changed, smart  features like this got ditched.

Servant Dagon Vegan Skateboard shoeThe Dagon’s mesh tongue is squishy and porous. Soft on the top of the foot but still providing all the padding you want and allowing good air flow. One of the biggest complaints we have with synthetic skateboard shoes are their breathability.  The Dagon on the other hand breathes like a canvas shoe. No sweaty feet here. Check out that lace protection too! The bottom eyelet on the ollie side is totally covered from skate wear. If you want to hide the 4Skin logo, just cross the laces over that middle loop, but we are wearing our 4Skins loud and proud while keeping the tongue centered.

Servant Dagon Vegan Skateboard shoeServant’s footbed uses “Cush Strobel”. This is the luxury liner of skateboard shoes and it feels amazingly soft, running from the heel to toe. Most skateboard shoes have a stiff cardboard and foam inlay under the insole. Go ahead, rip the insoles out of your Vans and you’ll likely find cardboard. Those cardboard strips eventually crack and breakdown. On the other hand “Cush Strobel” is stitched and glued but still fully flexes.

The collars have a nice bit of padding but the silver lining is in the back collar scoop. That makes the heel lock in place, and combined with the 4Skin red faux-suede’s super soft texture, your feet feel solid with out the ankle burn. Socks or no.

Jacob (Jakke) Ovgren provided the art for the insole. It’s sort of reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch’s human-animal hybrids. Like out of a Dr. Octagon song, half-fish-half-carrot-half-man. The Servant logo (which is more upside-down cross then cross makes this shoe the second most occult skateboard shoe.  Emerica’s second BA.KU. still holds top billing in this department.

Servant Dagon Vegan Skateboard shoe

A look at the business end of the Dagon. From 0-10 hours of skate wear. The piping is ripping for sure, but the stitching is well intact and shows no sign of letting loose any time soon. Besides some minor street scuffs the 4Skin faux-suede is holding true.

Servant Dagon Vegan Skateboard shoeServant’s sole have a triangle/polygon pattern with some deep pockets with the exception of the toes and heels. Good flex and board feel where it matters, and grippy toes and heels for tricks. These shoes are nothing if not strategical and thought out. Soles with 0-10 hours or wear.

10 hours of skate wear

Servant Dagon Vegan Skateboard ShoesThe Dagon is far from through the wringer and may last longer then the time we have to destroy the shoe. Halfway through the skate time usually put in a skate wear test, and they are looking like they’ve just been out for a quick hour-long session. So lets sum it up.

Servant Dagon Vegan Skateboard Shoes

The Dagon has hands down been one of the most comfortable shoes we have ever skated. The fit of the shoes are medium width and finding the right size was a snap. Servant has a “size finder” guide. Just pop out a ruler (metric or imperial), pen and paper.  We reviewed the Dagon in size EU43/US10 which feels like the most solid ten we have ever skated.

The shoe is super durable and breathes well, so you can skate all day and night, avoiding overly sweaty feet. The heels are protected with “Cush Strobel” and a solid collar. Lace protection and solid toe caps keep the shoes looking clean and consistent.  Excellent art, style, and possibly the best value in a skateboard shoe we have seen in a long while.  Servant sent us the Speedblue colorway but they’re available in Red/Black and Black too!

Servant Dagon Vegan Skateboard ShoesThe best we save for last, the reason we do this site. No Cow! Represent! Skateboarders everywhere, the Servant Dagon should be your next skateboard shoe.

Ban Pig Gestation Crates in New Jersey.

This one is for our pig friends in the Garden State!  Right now, HSUS is working of a campaign to ban pig gestation crates in New Jersey. The animal protection bill S.1921 was popular in the state legislator but Gov. Chris Christie vetoed the bill saying he was, “balancing the humane treatment of pigs with the financial well being of the farmers who raise them for a living.

Hmm, irony.  The bill can still go to a vote and override Gov. Christies shit choices.  If you live in New Jersey, or just pretend you do, check out your legislatures phone number here and tell them what you think.  Be polite and keep in mind that most of the New Jersey Legislature has already voted in favor of banning the crates.

The soles are thin cupsoles for that close board feel and a real light weight shoe!

Unlocking The Truth

Unlocking The Truth is a self described heavy metal band ( though I think they sound a little like mid 90’s hardcore) from Brooklyn NY. Notable maybe because of the age and the skill level of Malcolm and Jared (Alec on Bass not in this short doc.) posses. It would be naive to imagine a good bit of attention isn’t based on race. The fascination with people of color in metal and hardcore music isn’t anything new, though at times can borderline spectacle.  The Avant/Garde Diaries documentary gives us a brief look at some kids finding their own path despite bullying and pressure to conform.  The shit we all deal with growing up, especially when weird, a skater, or someone just more in-tune with who they are and less concerned with the crowd, is the real message of note here.  Keep rocking guys, and keep skating!

Praxis Poet

Praxis Poet Vegan Skateboard ShoePraxis Poet is a slim, low-top skateboard shoe with a nice vegan synthetic upper and some style to boot! With either a black synthetic nubuck or a grey soft synthetic-suede called chamude you’ll be able to pop off more ollies, flip tricks, and general ripping then a traditional canvas upper.

Praxis Poet Vegan Skateboard ShoeThe Poet is built on the Praxis Sacred Sole, which is a super slim cupsole. It has incredible board feel and a great grip. We reviewed the Elemental last year and the sole and board feel was the best part of the shoe with out a doubt.  Ballistic nylon is fitted on the heals as well as boarding the toe. The tongue and collars have a mid-weight of padding for a comfortable fit with good foot protection.

Some of the little details on this shoe really count too. The cut-outs for the bottom two lace eyelets and the top nylon give you some options to really make the laces last. But they come with spares just in case!
